The Probate Court can order the involuntary commitment of an alleged mentally ill person into a hospital. A person with mental illness may be committed if the following conditions apply:
- The person is dangerous to self
- The person is dangerous to others
- The person risks injury to self by not providing basic needs
- The person would benefit from treatment in a hospital for mental illness
All outpatient affidavits filed by individuals must be filed in person and in the county of residence of the alleged mentally ill person. Any affidavit for Outpatient Only Commitments must be accompanied by a doctor's statement verifying the allegation and facts contained in the affidavit.
