Once an Officiant has solemnized your marriage the bottom most portion of your license, referred to as the marriage license return, must be returned to the Probate Court. This marriage license return proves to the Court that the marriage was solemnized, a marriage is only official once the return has been provided to the Court.
The marriage license return can be returned to the Court via mail or in person. Please note that some officiants will mail the return to the Court for the applicants. It is up to the applicants to discuss this with their officiant.
It is the responsibility of the applicants to ensure the marriage license return is returned to the Probate Court.
Once the return is received the Court will issue two certified copies of your marriage license. The certified copies are what various agencies, such as Bureau of Motor Vehicles and Social Security, will request as proof of your marriage.
The first two certified copies are prepaid as part of the $55 cost of the marriage license. Additional certified copies can be requested at any time at the cost of $2. Please see our page about Requesting Certified Copies for more information.
