Municipal courts were created by the General Assembly in Chapter 1901 of the Ohio Revised Code. The territorial jurisdiction is established by statute. The Miami County Municipal Court has jurisdiction over Miami County. Municipal courts have jurisdiction over misdemeanors and have authority to conduct prelininary hearings in felony cases. Municipal Courts may also handle civil cases in which the amount in controversy does not exceed $15,000 and small claims up to $3,000. Municipal court judges also may perform marriages. Municipal court judges must be attorneys with at least six years experience in the practice of law. The Governor makes appointments to fill vacancies in municipal courts that occur between election. |
