Deputy Amber Mahan

Deputy Eric Harnish

Deputy Amber Mahan

Deputy Eric Harnish

Deputy Eric Harnish is a school resource officer (S.R.O.) currently assigned to the Miami East and Bethel School Districts on the east side of the county. Deputy Harnish alternates his days between both school districts, however is available to respond to either district should a situation develop in which he is needed.

Deputy Amber Mahan is currently assigned to the Newton and Milton-Union School Districts on the west side of the county in the position of S.R.O. Deputy Mahan also alternates her days between both school districts, and like Deputy Harnish is available to respond back to either district should a situation develop in which she is needed.

Dep. Harnish and Deputy Mahan are also assisted by the School Education & Resource Officer (S.E.R.O.). The S.E.R.O. position replaces the D.A.R.E. officer in the county school districts (Bethel, Bradford, Miami East, Milton-Union, & Newton). The deputy who will fill this position will be working with students from elementary through high schools at each of the five districts. While some aspects of D.A.R.E. will still be taught, there will also be instruction on several other topics such as bullying, self-esteem, peer pressure, etc. Additionally, the S.E.R.O. deputy will work with staff at each of the districts identifying any problems or issues with their respective student populations (i.e. the choking game, morning glory seeds, etc.).

The school resource officers also serve as a liaison between the school districts and the sheriff’s office. They work toward conflict resolution with the students and strive to assist the schools in creating a friendly and safe learning environment.

The Bethel, Miami East, Milton-Union, and Newton School Districts contribute together to fund one S.R.O. position. The Miami County Sheriff’s Office funds the other S.R.O. position as well as the S.E.R.O. position.
