The primary goal of this unit is to link public assistance recipients with employment opportunities in order to move program participants toward long-term economic self-sufficiency. The unit achieves this goal through the following initiatives:
ASSESSMENT
Each participant undergoes a thorough assessment to determine what steps, if any, are required to prepare the individual to enter employment. Work history, education, past training, and any barriers to employment are among the areas reviewed with clients.
EDUCATION & TRAINING
This program component, available through local post-secondary schools, offers basic education, job readiness, and job skills training to eligible idividuals. Developmental services, such as drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, and rehabilitation services are also options available through this program to aid participants in becoming job-ready.
JOB CLUB
This course, taught by agency staff, stresses self-presentation, interviewing skills, conflict resolution, and job retention, key components to the individual's ability to establish and maintain employment.
LEARNING, EARNING, AND PARENTING (LEAP)
This program encourages pregnant teens and teen parents to remain in school through graduation, or to participate in GED classes and attend regularly to completion. Cash bonuses and penalties are used as incentives to participate.
CHILD CARE
The availability of affordable child day care is often the determining factor in whether or not a family can achieve and maintain independence from public assistance. The agency provides publicly funded child care for eligible families, through the competent services of an extensive network of day care providers throughout the County. |
